State Politicians

When contacting state politicians it is important to remember that these are the elected officials who will be evaluating and voting on the governor’s budget. There are some simple rules to remember.
1) You do not want to be disrespectful or antagonistic. Politicians live in a world of formalism, if you want them to consider your opinion, express it clearly, concisely, and politely.
2) State politicians are in their positions because they have won an election to represent you. They have chosen a life of public service and they try their best to represent you well. Remember to thank then for their service and thank them for their past support of the libraries. Do not denigrate them or chide their past decisions. And remember to thank them for their time.
3) Remember to tell them what you want them to do. Don’t just express frustration or discontent with what they are doing, make sure to emphasize what you want them to do. The primary concern at the moment is restoration of library funding and support for our libraries. Express to them that this is what you, their constituent wants.
