Newspapers

Newspapers are the most effective method of getting our message out to the largest number of people.

Letters to the editor: The strategy here is to drum up positive sentiment and discussion by writing letters to the editor expressing your opinions and concerns. Do not spam the newspapers and do not send the same letter to every newspaper. Just like advertising, a few tailored letters to a few local papers will have substantially more impact than sending a generic letter to a hundred papers. You are more likely to be published and you are more likely to resonate with readers if you stick to what you know and stick to your community.

Contact with news staff: We want the news writers to take a personal interest in the plight of libraries. We want them to write articles about local rallies, local demonstrations, and we want them to seek comment from our elected officials.

The main thing here is to get in the media and to stay there. We call this earned media and this is our bread and butter. If there is sufficient demand for the newspaper list, I’ll compile radio and tv contacts.

The fine people over at SAVE OHIO LIBRARIES are currently hosting three quality sample press releases. They’ve already done the work so rather than reinvent the wheel, check them out here at Press Releases.
