Monday Night Update

Monday June 29, 2009

Today has been an exciting day in the effort to restore funding for our libraries. We have several pieces of news to share with you.

1) Mid-Coast Perspective has learned that tonight at 7PM the Akron City Council has adopted a resolution in support of restoring library funding. Mid-Coast Perspective will post a copy of it when it’s available (presumably tomorrow). This is a positive step in the right direction as we will need the leadership of our local leaders if we are to succeed in restoring library funding.

2) As was reported earlier, the budget committee has postponed yet another meeting tonight. This is the third postponement in three days.

3) We noted last night that the word out of the statehouse was that it was increasingly likely that a temporary budget would be passed to give the legislators more time to work out a budget compromise. Today, it was announced that a one week temporary budget is in effect at 70% expense levels. This gives us additional time to encourage our state and local elected officials to come out in support of restoring funding to our libraries.

4) Yesterday, I issued a challenge to everyone to come up with new ways to get our message out. Today I’m proud to share with you an overwhelming response. We’ve gotten some great ideas including window painting your car, t-shirts, stopping by your local legislator’s house with your favorite book, text-message chains, youtube appeals, awareness bake sales, and one utterly hilarious suggestion that everyone drive down to Lisbon with their dogs and have them express how full of shit Ted Strickland’s budget proposal is.

Lets keep up the good work, the innovation, and the public pressure.

In Solidarity,
Johnathon

  1. BEWARE ! The extension (which could have been 30 days)is simply in hopes that the rallying against public library budget cuts will quiet. These are THE most important 7 days ! We must INCREASE our voice against the cuts. Need thousands of emails/phone calls to legislators. DON’T GET COMPLACENT ! IT’S ACTION TIME !!!!!!
